Why did Roger Maris turn from a HOF player in the early 60's to a very good player?

Why do you think his numbers began to decline as rapidly as they did, the man was hitting 60 homeruns a year for a couple years, what happened, any old timers that could answer this...THANK YOU VERY MUCH
