What is the best course to get in Melbourne Australia so I can get a resident visa?

I want to migrate to Melbourne Australia and I heard that to get a resident visa, I need to apply for a student visa first then study for 3years. In my three years stay there, I can apply for a resident visa. Is that true? However what is the best course to take so I can land a job immediately after schooling?
