Has Derek Jeter's quest for hit number 3,000 put the Yankees in a very uncomfortable position?

Considering Jeter's future HOF career and his great popularity with Yankee fans, management is surly walking a tight rope at the moment. I have no doubt that the Yankees will allow Jeter to achieve his goal, however the big question is what happens, post 3,000, if he doesn't improve at the plate?
